Neil Peart update: March 2015 - "Miracle in Colorado"

Neil Peart posted a March update to his website entitled "Miracle in Colorado."

This installment follows the 11-year odyssey of finding a lost motorcycle luggage case and its contents. (The incident was originally reported in Peart's book, Roadshow: Landscape With Drums, A Concert Tour by Motorcycle.)

Kevin J. Anderson, who's also featured in this story, tweeted this summary:

Here's an excerpt:

Then I began to add up the irreplaceable items, like my shaving kit and medicines, my phone and address book, a copy of Traveling Music with all of my proofreading notes in it, the little Zeiss birdwatching binoculars Jackie had bought for our East African safari in 1987, and--worst of all--the Patek Philippe watch Carrie had bought me for my fiftieth birthday and the Cartier engagement ring she'd given me in 2000. I didn't wear them when I was riding or drumming, but I liked to have them with me, in what ought to have been a safely locked case.

Where was it?

One corner of my mind knew this wasn't the worst that could happen--my imagination always allowed for the possibility of extreme, fatal disasters. But at the same time, having barely survived some tragedies that weren't imaginary had left me permanently fragile. I lived and functioned inside a thin armor of "adaptation" that was easily pierced, and I was feeling bad about this lost case, near tears. I stopped at the side of the road, lit a cigarette with shaking hands, and tried to think what to do.

Definitely worth reading!

Kevin J. Anderson announces 2113 novella and Rush-based story anthology

Update - 9/17/14

When I first posted this, I somehow missed one of the major announcements. Reading Kevin's most recent blog entry, I can see there are actually three Rush-related releases that Kevin is working on.

1. An anthology of Rush-inspired stories that he's co-editing.

2. A new novella that Kevin is writing entitled 2113

3. A sequel to Clockwork Angels entitled Clockwork Lives that Kevin is writing with Neil Peart.

---------------------------------------

At Rushcon 2014 this weekend, Clockwork Angels: The Novel author  Kevin J. Anderson had two big Rush-related announcements: A new novella he's writing entitled 2113, as well as an anthology of Rush-based stories he's co-editing.

Kevin also made the announcement via his NEW Facebook page:

For those of you NOT lucky enough to be at Rushcon, I made an announcement this afternoon about an anthology of Rush-based stories I'll be coediting with John McFetridge for ECW (publishers of Clockwork Angels). We have a gang of award-winning and bestselling authors already lined up to contribute stories based on Rush songs. And I'll be doing a novella called "2113".

Thanks to Kevin for the head's up!

Clockwork Angels comic #1 released

The first of six Clockwork Angels comics was released today, March 19. This series is a collaboration between writer Kevin J. Anderson (who brought us Clockwork Angels: The Novel) and artist Nick Robles -- based on a story and lyrics by Neil Peart.

You can buy Clockwork Angels #1 (and upcoming issues) at your local comic store or Rush Backstage, including "Cover A" and "Cover A Limited Edition" versions. There are even more covers available from BOOM! Studios.

Check out a preview of the comic here.

Here's the "Cover A Limited Edition":

The reviews so far have been great. You can read a few here:

Comic Bastards:

The art in this book is really gorgeous.  Apparently, Nick Robles is a newcomer so hopefully a lot of people will discover his art through this book, because I'm already a fan.  The whole steampunk thing is very hackneyed at this point, but the art is so good in this book that I overlooked that fact completely.

Big Comic Page:

To start off with. WOW! Robles' illustrations on this are nothing short of spectacular, managing to encapsulate perfectly the writing of Anderson and the feel that Peart gives to all of his works. The use of sepia tones to indicate present time is a nice touch as well, what with the story being mostly told in flashbacks, and gives the whole thing an almost 'Wizard of Oz' feel to it. Everything is so beautifully sculpted that a world is created that manages to be both Victorian Steampunk and Sci-Fi Opera.

Clockwork Angels graphic novel coming March 2014

Even though Rush won't be on the tour or releasing a new album during 2014, fans now have something to look forward to: a graphic novel adaptation of Clockwork Angels.

Written by Kevin J. Anderson, who also wrote Clockwork Angels: The Novel, and illustrated by artist Nick Robles, the first of six issues will be published in mid-March 2014 by Boom! Studios.

You can pre-order Clockwork Angels #01 on the Boom! Studios website.

Today, Anderson posted a new blog entry CLOCKWORK ANGELS Graphic Novel-Meet the Artist, Nick Robles. He writes of Robles:

Neil and I both loved his work.  And when Nick started sending a flood of concept sketches of the characters--Owen Hardy, Mr. Paquette, Lavinia, the Pedlar, the Watchmaker, the Anarchist--and steamliners, the pedlar's steampunk cart, we knew we had the right guy.  AND he's a Rush fan, so what more could we ask for?

Also, in case you missed it: In early December, USA Today interviewed Anderson and Peart about the upcoming adaptation, which also included some concept art by Robles.

Can't wait to see how this project comes together!

Kevin J. Anderson's blog: Always a Rush

In his latest blog post, Clockwork Angels: The Novel author Kevin J. Anderson takes us backstage at a Rush show in Denver. Kevin's blogs are always entertaining, but I think Rush fans will especially enjoy this one.

Here's an excerpt:

And the concert was amazing, as expected. Seeing some of the Clockwork Angels songs performed, watching the visuals that so closely match my own imagination from what I translated into the novel--it's a very moving experience for me.  I long to return to that lovely steampunk fantastic universe...but other projects call first.

Kevin J. Anderson thinks big with novelization of "Clockwork Angels"

Here's something most Rush fans probably never thought they'd see: Kevin J. Anderson, a writer of many books and sometime collaborator of Neil Peart's, is working on a novelization of Rush's forthcoming album, "Clockwork Angels."

Kevin J. Anderson

Here's the announcement from Kevin:

After dropping hints for a while, finally the big announcement, a new project unlike any other I've ever done...and something that I consider very cool.

Most of you are aware of my long-standing friendship with Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist from the legendary rock band Rush, as well as how much Rush has influenced my work. My first novel Resurrection, Inc. was closely inspired by the Rush album "Grace Under Pressure," and I can point to dozens of other novels and stories that bear a clear Rush influence. Neil and I wrote an original short story, Drumbeats, which we thought turned out rather well.

For more than twenty years, Neil and I have wanted to collaborate on something MAJOR, a way we could tie together our imaginations, and at last that's happening.

I'm writing the novelization of Rush's forthcoming album Clockwork Angels, their first new CD in five years. Imagine if someone had written the novel of The Wall, Tommy, or Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band when those classic albums were released. For Rush fans, CLOCKWORK ANGELS is that project.

I worked together with Neil to flesh out the epic story told over the course of the music, as well as the artist Hugh Syme whose paintings fill the CD booklet. In a young man's quest to follow his dreams, he is caught between the grandiose forces of order and chaos. He travels across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy, with lost cities, pirates, anarchists, exotic carnivals, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life. To whet your appetite, Rush released the first two tracks, "Caravan" and "BU2B"--listen to those songs to get an idea of the story's beginning.

I'm writing the chapters now, incorporating the lyrics into the narrative, and having a fantastic time. More details to come, but for now--to quote a line from Caravan: "I can't stop thinking big."

Thanks to Ed at Rushisaband for the head's up!

Two out-of-print stories by Kevin J. Anderson with Rush connections now available on Kindle

In Kevin J. Anderson's recent blog about his visit with Neil Peart, he wrote about how one of his novels, Resurrection, Inc. ($2.84) and a short story he co-authored with Neil Peart, "Drumbeats," ($1.99) are available as ebook downloads for Kindle and other readers.

First a word about the Kindle: You don't need to have a Kindle device to buy these stories. You can download free software for your PC or Mac device, as well as many other devices.

I recently bought a new Kindle Wi-Fi device ($138), and the reading experience on it is, in a word, extraordinary (even my wife, who's not into gadgets, was blown away).

Resurrection, Inc.

As Kevin explains in his blog:

My first novel, Resurrection, Inc., is closely based on the Rush album “Grace Under Pressure.”  (It’s been out of print for a while, but we’ve just made it available in ebook format on the Kindle and for other readers

http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/17515.)

I mentioned the Rush inspiration in the acknowledgments of the novel, and when I received my author’s copies, I autographed a copy each for Neil, Geddy, and Alex, and sent them off to the record label…and about a year later I received a letter from Neil, and we’ve been in touch ever since.  In fact, I’ve known Neil longer than I’ve known Rebecca…and she and I just celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary.

"Drumbeats"

Again, from Kevin:

(Neil) and I collaborated on a creepy story about a drummer bicycling through Africa, “Drumbeats,” (also recently available on Kindle and Smashwords), and we’re talking about a more extensive project.

I've read this story, and it is indeed very creepy. Definitely worth reading. It will be interesting to see what Neil and Kevin's "more extensive project" entails.

It's also worth noting that you can buy ebook versions of three of Neil Peart's books:

Rush and a Mountaintop: Kevin J. Anderson and Neil Peart go hiking

Kevin J. Anderson, the prolific writer and friend of Neil Peart, wrote about his recent visit with Neil in Colorado. It starts like this:

Two great Rush concerts in one week and summiting a 14,264-ft peak; it’s tough to decide which part I enjoyed most.  (On the other hand, I don’t have to decide.)
