Kevin J. Anderson's blog: Always a Rush

In his latest blog post, Clockwork Angels: The Novel author Kevin J. Anderson takes us backstage at a Rush show in Denver. Kevin's blogs are always entertaining, but I think Rush fans will especially enjoy this one.

Here's an excerpt:

And the concert was amazing, as expected. Seeing some of the Clockwork Angels songs performed, watching the visuals that so closely match my own imagination from what I translated into the novel--it's a very moving experience for me.  I long to return to that lovely steampunk fantastic universe...but other projects call first.

Clockwork Angels novel charts at #27 on the NYT bestsellers list - Sep 23

Clockwork Angels: The Novel charted at #27 on the New York Times Hardcover Fiction Best Sellers list for September 23 - Oct 7.

Clockwork Angels: The Novel debuted at #18 on the New York Times Hardcover Fiction Best Sellers list for September 16.

I've been listening to Neil Peart narrate the audio version of the novel, which has been quite a treat. I always knew Neil had a great voice for reading, but he's also a natural storyteller. It helps that he he came up with such a rich story, and Kevin J. Anderson filled out the story with some really beautiful writing, descriptions, and characters.

You can order the audio version on Amazon/Audible by clicking the picture below:

News about audiobook version of "Clockwork Angels"

Kevin J. Anderson, the author of Clockwork Angels: The Novel, has a blog post about the audiobook version of the novel, which is being read by Neil Peart.

I received the final galley pages of the novel to proofread, while Neil went into the studio to record the audiobook, and I tried to stay one day ahead of him so I could send in corrections and sentence changes before he recorded the words. I received email reports from him every day, telling me Our Hero's progress across the steampunk landscapes of Albion, Poseidon City, Atlantis, and the Seven Cities, his encounters with the Watchmaker, the Anarchist, the Wreckers...all while I was up in Seattle with Brian Herbert brainstorming the intricate plot for MENTATS OF DUNE. My head was in two universes (not counting the real one) but every night I took a few hours before bed to proofread as much as possible, send in more corrections...and we finally got it done.

Kevin J. Anderson thinks big with novelization of "Clockwork Angels"

Here's something most Rush fans probably never thought they'd see: Kevin J. Anderson, a writer of many books and sometime collaborator of Neil Peart's, is working on a novelization of Rush's forthcoming album, "Clockwork Angels."

Kevin J. Anderson

Here's the announcement from Kevin:

After dropping hints for a while, finally the big announcement, a new project unlike any other I've ever done...and something that I consider very cool.

Most of you are aware of my long-standing friendship with Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist from the legendary rock band Rush, as well as how much Rush has influenced my work. My first novel Resurrection, Inc. was closely inspired by the Rush album "Grace Under Pressure," and I can point to dozens of other novels and stories that bear a clear Rush influence. Neil and I wrote an original short story, Drumbeats, which we thought turned out rather well.

For more than twenty years, Neil and I have wanted to collaborate on something MAJOR, a way we could tie together our imaginations, and at last that's happening.

I'm writing the novelization of Rush's forthcoming album Clockwork Angels, their first new CD in five years. Imagine if someone had written the novel of The Wall, Tommy, or Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band when those classic albums were released. For Rush fans, CLOCKWORK ANGELS is that project.

I worked together with Neil to flesh out the epic story told over the course of the music, as well as the artist Hugh Syme whose paintings fill the CD booklet. In a young man's quest to follow his dreams, he is caught between the grandiose forces of order and chaos. He travels across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy, with lost cities, pirates, anarchists, exotic carnivals, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life. To whet your appetite, Rush released the first two tracks, "Caravan" and "BU2B"--listen to those songs to get an idea of the story's beginning.

I'm writing the chapters now, incorporating the lyrics into the narrative, and having a fantastic time. More details to come, but for now--to quote a line from Caravan: "I can't stop thinking big."

Thanks to Ed at Rushisaband for the head's up!
