Drummer's Reality Camp Roundtable video with Neil Peart

Update - 7/21/12: All three parts are now available at DrumChannel.com now.

-----------------

Neil Peart participated in a roundtable for LA Music Academy's 3rd Drummer Reality Camp on Friday, June 29, 2012. The other panelists included Jim Keltner, Doane Perry and Don Lombardi with moderator Michael Packer. Michael posted a photo of the event to his Facebook site:

DrumChannel.com also filmed the event and now has Part 1 on their website (subscription required to view):

Roundtable Discussion with Neil Peart, Jim Keltner and Doane Perry Part 1

Description from DrumChannel.com:

50 students attended this class and they all agreed they would never approach the drum set the same again. It's not about writing the song, it's about how a drummer should compose his part to enhance the song. This is a passionate in-depth look at how these legends approach their instrument. This is a four part Roundtable that could shape your entire career.

Drum Channel: Original Master Recordings of "2112"

Drum Channel sent this out in their most recent newsletter.

You Will Not Believe This!
It is true, in the next few weeks we will tell you how to purchase the original master recordings of RUSH-2112 and how you can listen to Neils drum track only, the band with Neil or the band only, and record yourself on drums with Geddy and Alex. You have to be a Newsletter subscriber to get access, so tell your friends to join the DC Newsletter. More about this coming soon!

For a while, I've thought this would be a really interesting thing to have for all Rush albums. It's too bad they didn't add this to the latest release of Moving Pictures.

Thanks to Rushisaband for the head's up.

Neil Peart Master Class: Free Lesson 9 - Neil performs his warm-up routine

DrumChannel.com is offering a free lesson from Neil Peart's Frontiers of Composition and Articulation.

I've watched the entire class when it was first released in June, 2009, and it's a great instructional video. Important note: It appears when purchasing a Master Class, you "subscribe" to the class for 12 months (you don't download the content).

DVD Review - Fire on Ice: The Making of "The Hockey Theme"

I just received Neil Peart's new video yesterday, "Fire on Ice: The Making of 'The Hockey Theme'" and wanted to post a short review. You can order the video by clicking the following image:

image

The DVD shows the progression of Neil Peart's version of "The Hockey Theme," from early arrangements of the song to the final music video. In between is a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creative process behind this one-minute song.

What I found particularly interesting were:

  • Neil and composer Matt Harris discussing the initial ideas of the arrangement
  • Neil playing to multiple demo versions of the song
  • Neil discussing drum set ideas with the folks at DW
  • DW artist Louis showing the process of painting the drums
  • Neil rehearsing with Cal State Northridge students (I'm sure those students had some stories to tell!)

Through all of this, you can see Neil Peart's passion for his work. I've never seen him so open about his creative process -- and I think a lot of it has to do with his reverence for "The Hockey Theme."

The Extras on the disc include extended scenes of creating the arrangement and the drum set. There's also some footage of the surprise visit of The Stanley Cup to the recording session. In all, there's over 90 minutes of footage on this disc.

If you want to read Neil's essay about this project, read "Fire on Ice" on his official website.

Power and Peart

This was posted a week or so ago, but here's a picture of Power (Ari Gold) and Neil Peart after filming a video together at Drum Channel headquarters. Neil Peart has a cameo in the movie Adventures of Power.

Here's what Ari wrote about Neil on his blog:

September 24, 2009

There are few people I've met in my life that are as generous and soulful as drummer, lyricist, writer, and proud new father Neil Peart. Last week I was on tour with my band in Los Angeles, and Neil took five hours out of his schedule to drive up to Drum Channel in Oxnard and shoot an interview with me about the power of music to change lives. "Adventures of Power" is running a charity to support music education and Neil's a part of it. Afterwards I got in costume as Power and we shot an air-drums-versus-drums video. Drum Channel is editing it all right now and it'll be ready soon!

If you're looking for lessons on how to live a good life, how to ride the ups and downs, pick up his book "Roadshow".
