New article by Neil Peart: "Drummer with a Singletrack Mind"

Neil Peart has posted an article he wrote for a British motorcycling weekly. Because he was writing for a new audience, Neil explained many more details about his daily routine on the road:

Since 1996 I have been traveling on Rush tours by motorcycle, riding to virtually every concert in the United States, Canada, South America, and Europe. Hundreds of shows, tens of thousands of miles, and a million memories -- almost all good, and many spectacular, like the American West, the Brazilian rainforest, the Stelvio Pass, and the Yorkshire Dales.

A more-or-less typical example of my touring life would be the U.K. part of our Clockwork Angels tour in May, 2013. Here's how it works...

Here are the details from Rush.com:

AUDIO AND VIDEO RELEASES INCLUDE EPIC VERSIONS OF SONGS RARELY PERFORMED AND NEVER-BEFORE CAPTURED ALONGSIDE NEWLY REWORKED ARRANGEMENTS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR;

BLURAY/DVD INCLUDES EXCLUSIVE BACKSTAGE TOUR DOCUMENTARY, SOUNDCHECK FOOTAGE, AND TOUR FILM OUTTAKES IN ADDITION TO THE 3 HOUR CONCERT FILM

Rush have unveiled details for their first new recording since being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year. On November 19th, "RUSH: CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR" will be released simultaneously via Anthem/Roadrunner Records on CD and the companion BLURAY/DVD on Anthem/Zoe Vision/Rounder.

"RUSH: CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR" was filmed and recorded last November at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, during Rush's highly successful Clockwork Angels Tour. The eleven month-marathon world tour crossed North America twice and ventured overseas to Europe in support of the band's acclaimed 2012 studio release "CLOCKWORK ANGELS."

In capturing the tour's electrifying three hour set, "RUSH: CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR" pairs Rush classics ("Tom Sawyer," "The Spirit Of Radio," "2112"), with a nod to the 80's Rush era (The Analog Kid," "Territories," "Subdivisions") alongside newly reworked arrangements specifically for the tour featuring the Clockwork Angels String Ensemble ("Headlong Flight," "YYZ," "Red Sector A"). The string section marks the first time the trio has brought additional musicians on the road with them. To showcase their latest studio release, the epic set list also features nine tracks off "CLOCKWORK ANGELS." Other highlights include tracks rarely performed and never before recorded live ("The Body Electric," "Middletown Dreams"), in addition to three separate drum solos by the incomparable Neil Peart.

Beyond the incredible live performances, the DVD includes a 25-minute tour documentary titled "Can't Stop Thinking Big", featuring interviews with all 3 members, exclusive and behind the scenes footage, and offers a glimpse into the inner workings of the Rush tour machine and insight into the band members themselves. Other special features on the DVD include the trio of hilarious shorts created specifically for the tour as well as interviews and outtakes captured during their filming. Additional filmed sketches and a rare soundcheck performance of perennial favourite "Limelight" round out the exclusive offerings.

"RUSH: CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR" comes on the heels of Anthem/Atlantic's September 30th release of "VAPOR TRAILS REMIXED," a newly remixed version of the band's 2002 album VAPOR TRAILS and 7-disc boxed set "THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1989-2007," which features every studio album Rush recorded for Atlantic Records.

New video interview with Neil Peart's first drum teacher Don George

Drum Talk TV has posted an extensive interview with Don George, Neil Peart's first drum teacher. Host Dan Shinder talks to George about a variety of subjects, including one of his students, Neil Peart, who started lessons at age 13.

Over the years, Neil Peart has talked and written of George. In his first interview with Modern Drummer, Neil talked about George, although he used a pseudonym. (It's worth noting that this interview happened around the time that Neil was becoming quite famous [Permanent Waves], so he most likely was protecting George's privacy).

CI: Who was your first drum teacher?

NP: I took lessons for a short period of time, about a year and a half. His name was Paul, I can't remember his last name. He turned me in a lot of good directions, and gave me a lot of encouragement. I'll never forget him telling me that out of all his students there were only two that he thought would be drummers. I was one of them. That was the first encouragement I had which was very important to me. For somebody to say to you, you can do it. And then he got into showing me what was hard to do. Although I wasn't capable of playing those things at the time, he was showing me difficult rudimental things, and flashy things. Double hand cross-overs and such. So he gave me the challenge. And even after I stopped taking lessons those things stayed in my mind, and I worked on them. And finally I learned how to do a double hand cross-over. I remember thinking how proud I would be if my teacher could see it.

In this Drum TV interview, when asked about Neil Peart as a student, George said, "Neil was always one step ahead, always practicing, always playing."

I'd never had a chance to hear Don speak, and I was impressed with his thoughtful and articulate discussions on drum technique, teaching, and inspiration. I can see why Neil was inspired by George.

One question he said he asks his students seems especially important: "Do you want to be a musician or a drummer?"When I started playing drums at age 15, I thought the correct answer was most certainly, "drummer." But after some 30 years of playing, I understand the importance of being a musician.

Happy 61st Birthday, Neil Peart

Neil Peart turns 61 on Thursday, September 12, and for once he's not celebrating on the road. Neil Peart News would like to wish the Professor a Happy Birthday, and hope he has a fun day.

To help celebrate, here are a few shots of Neil throughout his career:

Neil Peart tracking session video with Vertical Horizon

Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon has posted a video of Neil Peart tracking "Instamatic" from the forthcoming Echoes from the Underground. The video is viewable only to people who have pledged (and is very cool). Go to the PledgeMusic.com website to pledge.

It's always a treat to watch Neil Peart work in the studio. There's a lot of great stuff here, including how they turned Neil's bass drum into an igloo.

The Spirit of Rush fanzine archive now online

Before the Internet, there were virtually no community-based publications or forums for Rush fans. But in 1987, Mick Burnett set out to change that, and started publishing his own Rush fanzine, The Spirit of Rush. Each quarter, he and his small team would publish an issue jam-packed with interviews, album information, fan art, crossword puzzles, and a lot more.

Thanks to John Patuto at Cygnus-X1.net, you can now read the first 10 issues of The Spirit of Rush online  He'll be continuing to post more issues every week in chronological order until all 63 are online.

The Spirit of Rush - Issue #10

Remembering The Spirit of Rush creator Michael "Mick" Burnett

The first time I saw The Spirit of Rush was in March 1990, when I bought a copy from Mick himself at the Seattle Presto show. I'd been introduced to Mick by another fan, Monica Z, whom I'd also met for the first time at that Presto show (and would become one of my best friends).

When I got home from the show, I read the entire Spirit issue cover-to-cover (#10, Winter 1989-90). In the first pages was a letter to Mick from Neil Peart (dated December 7, 1989). At that point in my life, Neil held a kind of mythic status, so it was a revelation to read an actual letter from him to another fan.

Thanks to my friendship with Monica, I started to connect with a small circle of Rush fans that I hadn't even known existed. Monica would get news from Mick and other fans, and then she'd pass it along to me, usually during lunchtime phone calls. After years of only getting stories from a few magazines (Circus and Hit Parader), and sometimes MTV, I was inundated with information. I was a happy fan!

Fast forward to 2002 on the eve of Rush's first show in five years. Monica and I had flown from Seattle -- later to be joined by Keith Greenard from British Columbia. Mick and a group of European fans were also flying across the Atlantic to see Rush's return.

I still remember that many people almost didn't make it to the first show (and some probably didn't). A wicked series of thunderstorms hit the east coast and south the night before the show, throwing all air travel into chaos. Many fans ended up arriving in the middle of the night (like Keith Greenard), and some (like Mick, if I remember correctly) had to rent cars and drive from other states or cities. I remember thinking that nothing was going to stop these Rush fans!

On the day of the show, thunderstorms and heavy rain marched through Hartford. About an hour or two before showtime, I watched as lightning flashed near the venue, where thousands of Rush fans were "tailgating" before the show. Thunder exploded. Rain poured.

And then the sun came out. There were double rainbows. The symbolism of the weather, especially following the darkness of the past five years, wasn't lost on many fans.

In the whirlwind before and after those first two shows, I didn't have much time to chat with Mick. But I could tell from our brief interactions that he was a genuine and caring person, and definitely a force of good for Rush -- at a time when it wasn't cool to be a fan.

Neil Peart also commented on how Rush appreciated Mick's enthusiasm. In his letter in Issue 10, Neil wrote:

It is gratifying to see that our music has reached someone strongly enough to spur them into thought, and especially -- action. It must be true that the ultimate goal of any artist is to make someone else respond to the work as strongly as you felt about it. And if you can provoke thought, or even action, you have surely done a lot.

Sadly, not long after those shows, Mick passed away suddenly on August 2002 July 31, 2002. I still remember getting the call from Monica at work. We were both in shock. The Spirit of Rush continued for a few more issues, but after #63 was published, they closed their doors.

But if there's a silver lining here, it's that Mick had planted a seed. He was one of the people who inspired me to share my love of Rush and, in particular, Neil Peart's drumming and writing, with the world. In 2004, I started this website. And I watched many other great Rush fan sites start up, including Cygnus-X1.net.

I want to thank John Patuto at Cygnus-X1.net for sharing Mick's legacy on his site. Being a webmaster myself, I can tell you that there's a lot of work that goes into a project like this, and John's done a great job!
